The legend of Zula and Abrante

As you know, the Canary Islands are full of legends that surround the history and culture of each of them, la Gomera is no exception and of course the viewpoint of Abrante is not far behind. Well, behind this rock that allows us to see the entire province of Agulo, hides a history full of romance, drama, tragedy and magic.

The Legend of Zula and Abrante tells the story of two young lovers who lived a forbidden romance. The young Abrante, belonged to one of the prominent families of the island of Gomera, the young Zula on the other hand, was a modest worker of the village.

The two saw each other in secret as Gazaña, the mother of the maiden Abrante, was in total disagreement with that relationship. One day, Abrante decided to escape his home and meet Zula on top of one of the highest crags.

In her desperate journey, the young Abrante slipped, falling down one of the slopes and lost her life. Plunged into grief, the young Zula wished to appease his suffering by taking his aveon from Gazana, for which he sought the help of a sorceress who prepared a concoction so that she would suffer day and night the same pains that her daughter suffered when she died.

Despite this, Zula still wished that Abrante would be avenged in a better way, so he asked the sorceress to make an incantation so that Gazaña would be buried in a deep darkness along with the whole village. But for this, there was a requirement on the part of this witch: that Zula give her life in exchange for this spell.

So he told her that she should throw herself from the place she indicated to him and so it was, the young Zula committed suicide and in the place where his body fell a large mountain was raised that would bring the darkness that Zula wanted for the mother of his beloved.
