Doramas Rural Park

The rural park of Doramas is one of the most important landscapes of the entire north of the Canary Islands, and that is why, it is also one of the most protected in all of Spain.

It is characterized above all by being a park formed by ravines with greater vegetation, and also, derived from a lot of water. For this reason, also in previous years it was known as "The Jungle of Dorama".

Situation Doramas Rural Park

In 2009 the Doramas Rural Park was one of the most preserved in Gran Canaria.

Currently, the situation of the rural park of Doramas is one of the most favorable, and is that, although it was previously one of the areas that was most affected, it currently retains each of its spaces. 

Even the last relicts of the laurel forest can be found in Gran Canaria thanks to their protection.

Characteristics of the Doramas Rural Park

It is located in the north of the Gran Canaria, and covers the municipalities of Arucas, Firgas, Moya, Santamaría de Guía, Teror and Valleseco.

It is considered one of the most beautiful spaces on the island, and also with a lot of ecological value.

It has many ravines within which we can mention those of Azuaje and Moya, which are characterized by having a lot of vegetation. In addition, each has its own details.

Azuaje Special Nature Reserve

It is also a natural space that is protected, is located north of Gran Canaria, and is responsible for separating the municipalities of Firgas and Moya.

Barranco Oscuro Integral Nature Reserve

It is located between the municipalities of Moya and Valleseso in Gran Canaria, and is characterized by being one of the ravines that has the last samples of laurel forest.

The Canarian laurel forest is one of the types of subtropical forests that you can find in most of the Canary Islands. 

Its name is created because it is formed by tree species that belong to the Lauraceae family and this is why it is named. 

Inside the Park is also the Special Natural Reserve of Azuaje, which is shared by the municipalities of Firgas and Moya.

In addition, you will find the Los Tilos de Moya Special Nature Reserve where you can see a variety of plant and invertebrate species. 

In the Barranco Oscuro Integral Nature Reserve you can also see plant species that you will not find anywhere in the world.

Its name is due to a warrior of Canarian origin who in the late fifteenth century was greatly admired by all the inhabitants thanks to his bravery.

Its extension even exceeds 3,500 hectares. Inside there is an irregular square very similar to the most typical corners of the island.

You can also see the Nestor Museum, dedicated especially to a very important figure of modernist art, and one of the most important on the island.

Inside you can find more than 8,000 species of plants. In the Rural Park of Doramas, you will find the viewpoint of Osorio.

It has a very irregular relief, this because all the heights of the park are between 600 and 1,000 meters. Due to its large size it is also considered as a green lung.

Fauna and vegetation Doramas Rural Park

The Doramas Rural Park you can see more than 8,000 species of vascular plants, 30 of these are from Gran Canaria, 30 from Macaronesia, and 126 from the Canary Islands. 

Of all this amount only three are those that develop directly within the park, and they are: The Rooster Crest or better known Isoplexis chalcantha, the Doromas rejalgadera, and the white sage. 

49 species of vertebrate fauna, where it is important to mention some birds, such as the Gran Canaria woodpecker, the Canarian small buhó, and the Canarian eagle.

Also, the Monteverde robin, common finch, and the, some reptiles such as mullets, Gran Canaria lizards and amphibians such as the southern frog, or the common frog. 

Mammals such as the Osorio's shrew that usually live in the north and northwest of Gran Canaria.

In addition to this, years ago inside the park you could also find a monkey named Aythamy, or scientifically monkeithamy.

Inside the park all the invertebrates are present in the different species that exist. And, they include from the rarest animals to the best known as Machado's beret slug. 

Activities we can do in the Doramas Rural Park

It is the favorite park of all people who practice hiking and who love nature, this because it is a beautiful place where you can do different activities. 

You can see different ponds, fountains, statues, among other beautiful structures within the park. In addition, there is a sculpture that refers to the rebellious aborigines who fell down one of the ravines escaping slavery.

Another activity you can do in the park is to see the hand of the man that is right above the park. You have the opportunity to visit the farm of Osorio, it has a length of 204 hectares, and the altitude is 650 meters.

Trees have been placed since the nineteenth century, from chestnut trees, cork oaks, oriental bananas, oaks, araucarias, among others 

Also inside you have a recreational area and several trails that you can see throughout the estate. 

You can cycle in any of the places of this park, also mountaineering. This is because it is one of the parks where there is more diversity and nature to enjoy.

As it is an outdoor park you can do any type of activity without problems, from walking to making long tours.
